Heritage Yaks in Red Wing, Minnesota

Hello, I own a private farm, Heritage Yaks in the beautiful bluffs of Red Wing Minnesota.

Starting our yak journey in 2014 when my horse vet proclaimed “You need to have some yaks ” as he looked over our pastures.
Yak?  What’s a yak?!  He then explained them in a whimsical way that had us googling them excitedly.
In 2015 we were smitten with our first yak.   A bottle calf followed, then another weanling & in the blink of an eye we are now at 24 yak’s. We enjoy grooming their beautiful fiber, spending quiet time with them in the pasture (I call it the best therapy on earth).  We often marvel at how smart, fun & personable they are. The great yak people we have met too through owning yaks, being part of the registries, has really been a joy.
Went to Yak Camp 101 in 2018, learning invaluable information on proper yak care.  Also participated in the Yakspo 2018 CO event.  Our yaks were in the 2023 N.W.S.S. USYAKS virtual show & fiber contest.  Proudly our imperial bull Hercules was named National Champion Yak Bull & as well High Point yak of the show. Our yak fiber entries placed well too.
I have been a member of USYAKS since its inception & IYAK since registering our first yak.  We register all our yaks as I believe in supporting the organizations doing the great research, keeping track of lineage & reducing C.O.I (coefficient of inbreeding) as a fair share of yaks in the U.S. are related, having come from some of the original producers.  It’s been wonderful to have these organizations to further the breed, educate us & help our vet.
Working with a great group of dedicated yak lovers towards not only the best yak registry but the best website to reference everything yak that a future yak fan or yak owner would love to know.
