Yak are typically very easy to keep and handle. They require no special fencing needs. Standard 4-strand barbed wire fence is sufficient. Some ranches use hog fence or no climb horse fence, while others use strands of hot fence.

At minimum have a corral to contain animals for health, maintenance, and/or separation needs. Squeeze cutes and cattle handling facilities make working on yaks much easier for animal and handler. It is important to have some sort of containment system, even if it is just cattle panels attached to solid posts, to use while grooming, hoof trimming and vet work.

Shelter or wind breaks are suggested, however, yaks may choose not to use them. High heat and humidity will make yaks the most uncomfortable, make sure they have access to shade and water at all times. During the heat of the summer you will find yaks wadding in open water sources such as streams and ponds.
